On Tuesday afternoons, my friend Emily and I often eat sandwiches by the river where it just so happens, many people enjoy running. I’m convinced that Nike markets their women’s running shorts to French men. Fact: Most of those people have an interesting approach to dressing for such occasions. Fact: Lots of people run for exercise here in Paris.
If you’re planning on visiting the city soon, you might consider dusting yours off- you could either wear it and “fit it” or perhaps sell it as an authentic letter jacket and make a killing. They say funny things like “Johnson High” on them or even, in the place where the letter is sewn on the front, have things as ridiculous as snow flakes. A few Sundays ago, I walked around with a friend for a few hours and counted TWENTY-FIVE sightings of the letter jacket. Yes, that thing hanging in your closet that you’ll never wear again- that is what’s all the rage in the City of Light as we speak. The second trend is just as puzzling to me yet you can’t swing a baguette without finding one: letter jackets. Before I saw this woman walking down the street, I had seen overalls in stores and thought, “Surely no French person would fall for this…overalls? Get real.” I stand corrected. As a girl who grew up in the 90s, I don’t think there’s any way I could ever wear overalls again. The first is this:įULL LENGTH OVERALLS! I couldn’t believe it. One of my favorite things about walking around the city is seeing what the average Parisian wears- I love to see their outfits, how they layer, their variation in coats (that have lately switched from black pea coats to khaki trenches), the beautiful ways they tie and knot their scarves, and of course, their shoes: pointy-toed dress shoes or crazy, colorful baskets (sneakers) for men and heels and boots for ladies.ĭespite an overall chic aura in this city, I’ve noticed a few disturbing trends too. True story: some days, I walk down the street, feeling good about how I’ve put myself together until I see a French girl my age…and change my mind. Yes, you may be saying to yourself, “But Carrie is American…and fictional,” and I would agree, but we can’t argue with our dreams, can we? What I’ve discovered about Paris is that while yes, there are funky dressers, they are fewer than expected, giving way instead to the average Parisian who is much chicer than any of us Americans.

Coming to Paris, I envisioned meeting funkified fashionistas on every corner I pictured a city full of Carrie Bradshaws floating through their everyday lives leaving the rest us breathless in the wake of their fantastical clothing creations.
